Effectiveness of Nutool (Irrigation Therapy) in the Management of Sar’a (Epilepsy): A Case Report
Abstract
Background: Epilepsy (Sara) is a chronic neurological disorder characterized by recurrent seizures due to abnormal neuronal activity. In Unani system of medicine, it is attributed to the accumulation of morbid humors, particularly Balgham, in the brain. Nutool (irrigation therapy) is a regimenal therapy used to restore humoral balance and improve neurological function.
Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of Nutool (Irrigation Therapy) in the management of sar’a (Epilepsy).
Case Presentation: A 20-year-old female presented with recurrent seizures (2–3 episodes/month) for 4 years, along with loss of consciousness, headache, and post-ictal confusion. She was diagnosed with Sar’a Balghami.
Intervention and Results: Nutool therapy using a medicated decoction of Babuna, Nakhuna, Marzanjosh, Sa’tar, and Rehan was administered over the scalp for 30 minutes on alternate days for 28 days. The patient showed a reduction in seizure frequency from 3 to 1 episode per month, along with improvement in sleep, cognition, and overall well-being. No adverse effects were observed.
Conclusion: Nutool therapy appears to be a safe and effective adjunct in epilepsy management, improving symptoms and quality of life. Further clinical studies are required to validate these findings.
